Understanding Mexico’s Academic Terms and Why Calendars Matter

At Park Evaluations, the Licenciatura and Ingeniería are among the most frequent undergraduate credentials we evaluate for Mexico. Although both represent university-level study, determining their U.S. equivalency requires a closer look at the program itself, particularly its length and how the academic year is structured.

Understanding the Academic Calendar

Mexican transcripts and study plans (plan de estudios) frequently describe programs in terms of academic periods, rather than simply stating the number of years required for completion.

  • Semestre: An academic year divided into two principal instructional periods. A program consisting of eight semesters, for example, normally represents four academic years.
  • Cuatrimestre: A four-month academic period. Institutions operating continuously on a cuatrimestre calendar typically accommodate three academic terms per year without summer or winter breaks.
  • Tetramestre: May be used interchangeably for cuatrimestre or trimestre, or entirely unique to the institution itself.
  • Trimestre: Refers to a three-month or quarterly academic period (this is relatively less common).

U.S. Equivalency Recommendations at Park Evaluations

Consider two students who both earned a Licenciatura. One completed eight semesters over four years, while another completed nine cuatrimestres over three years. While a cuatrimestre-based program is not at all inferior in terms of rigorousness or quality of education, an accelerated calendar does translate to a shorter program, thus affecting U.S. equivalency.

Careful consideration of these differences helps ensure that foreign credentials are evaluated consistently and accurately within the context of the U.S. education system. Please refer to the table below for additional context and US equivalencies.

Academic Term Count Calendar Duration U.S. Academic Equivalence
8 Semestres 4 Years Bachelor’s Degree
9 Cuatrimestres 3 Years 3 Years of Undergraduate Coursework
10 Cuatrimestres 3.5 Years 3.5 Years of Undergraduate Coursework
11 and higher Cuatrimestres 4 Years Bachelor’s Degree
